hacı abdullah lokantası

Hacı Abdullah restaurant, which is on a side street just off of İstiklal Caddesi, at about mid point between Taksim and Galatasaray, is undoubtedly Istanbul's foremost restaurant for truly fine Istanbul cuisine. Since it is owned by a strongly religious Muslim family (as is already implicit from the name) no alcoholic drinks are served there - which should definitely not be a reason to stop anyone from going. I promise you that the food and the courteously well bred atmosphere will more than make up for the lack of tipple.

The main dining room is in an old building which has a cupola that gives a very beautiful diffused light in the daytime. I especially love the pickle jar decorations which they have. ;-)

The main courses, and one of the assistant chefs. The kitchen is in full view, you pass it as you enter the dining area.

Olive oil vegetable dishes.

Pickles, jams and condiments. Great gift for back home, no?

Eating at Hacı Abdullah is an experience which has to be enjoyed as a full three course meal, with olive oil starters, a warm entree, possibly (if you have room for it, a rice or börek) and then dessert and Turkish coffee. All of which will cost between 15 and 25 Euros.

Note: Although meat dishes are served I have still tagged Hacı Abdullah as a vegetarian restaurant since there are enough pure vegetable dishes cooked with olive oil to keep most vegetarians perfectly satisfied.
