ara cafe, limonlu bahçe and urban cafe

Ara cafe, which is owned by old guard photographer Ara Güler, serves kebaps as well as all sorts of other cafe type food which is loosely inspired by İstanbul cuisine, salads, pasta and desserts - all of it very nice. Located in an alley right off Istiklal, the cafe is not licensed for alcohol (at least as far as I can remember, but I could be wrong about this. So, don't take my word for it, but ask when you get there). The price range is from around 8 Euros to 20 Euros.

Ara Cafe is tucked away around a corner which is literally just a few steps away from Galatasaray square. (Address: Tosbag Sokak 8/a, Galatasaray, +90 212 245 4105)

Limonlu Bahçe (The "Lemon Garden), is a cafe which serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, and cafe food throughout the day, in a lovely city garden. The cafe is fully licensed, so you can try out their lemon based cocktails and their home made liqueurs while their pet turtles keep you company - yes, they really do have a couple of free roaming land turtles - and a gang of ultra-cool cats as well. And, before I forget, as is already implicit from their name - definitely try out their fresh squeezed lemonade. The price range is from 10 Euros to 25 Euros for a meal with soft drinks, alcoholic drinks you will need to add onto this price.

To get to Limonlu Bahçe walk down the hill from Galatasaray, along Yeniçarşı Caddesi. The high walls of the Galatasaray school will be on your left and the cafe is at Number 98, on your right at about the point where the street makes a turn to the right. (Address: Yeniçarşı Caddesi. N:98, Galatasaray, Beyoğlu / Taksim)

Urban Cafe, is probably my favorite of all the cafes near Galatasaray. Located in a tiny back alley which runs parallel to İstiklal on the southern side of the street, the cafe is a stone's throw away from Galatasaray square. There is great outdoors seating for inveterate smokers like myself, however the interior is really wonderful, dating back to Art Deco Istanbul. The photos which I took do no justice to how nice this place is, so please check out the photos on their own site here >>>.

And also really great food! The cafe serves cafe food and coffee and pastries all day long, and well into late night. The cost for a meal with soft drinks will be from 10 to 15 Euros. Beer, wine and raki are also available and their cost will have to be added onto the my estimate.
